History
of Santuario Island - The Return Home
|
Setting
sail on the return home, Villianueva and his crew were
excited about reaching the mainland. Upon arrival at La
Guaira port in Caracas, it was clear that the mainland
was still in a bit of disarray. Buildings, homes and shops
that once stood on the edge of the sea were no longer
there. After successfully docking the boat, the men not
wanting to return separated and went on their way. Villianueva
ordered the other crew to return to the boat at sun down.
He would then give further instructions. With a nod, all
of the men went on their way with some of the island riches
in hand. Villianueva, who had no intentions of returning
back to the island, went to his home.
Arriving
at an empty lot, which used to be his home, he wept in
thought that he had lost his family. Villianueva fell
to his knees, begging for one last chance to see his family.
A passerby stopped and asked if Villianueva was looking
for the people who used to live there. Villianueva nodded
and the passerby told him that the man of the house died
at sea during the storm and that the woman and child now
resided with the widow's sister across town. With this
news, Villianueva scampered to his feet, thanked the passerby
and ran across town to his sister-in-law's home. He excitedly
knocked on the door, and to her surprise, his wife answered
with a shocked look on her face. Villanueva explained
what had happened and explained what he had found on the
island. His wife, still in extreme shock, asked him what
he planned on doing. Villianueva sighed, and although
not wanting to give up the island that was his sanctuary
for the last several months, nor the diamonds, he told
his wife that he wanted to stay on the mainland and be
with his family. His wife asked more details about the
island and asked him, "Why not all of us just go
there? This place has taken a great loss due to the storm
and if there are fortunes to be made, shouldn't we make
them?" Villianueva, with a gleam in his eyes, nodded
and held his wife in a long embrace.

That
night, Villianueva and his family packed their belongings
and made their way to the dock, and much to his surprise,
most of the men had returned and many of them with wives,
children, girlfriends and family. The ship was fully loaded
with supplies, and Villianueva smiled as everyone boarded
the ship. The ship set sail once again to return to Villianueva's
island of sanctuary.
They
traveled all night and all of the next day before seeing
the island again. Using extreme caution, Villianueva directed
the boat to the small inlet successfully. The men lowered
some smaller boats that were loaded with family and friends,
along with supplies, and made their way to the sandy shores.
After completely unloading the ship, Villianueva and his
men gave the new arrivals a small tour of their island.
One of the arrivals asked, "What is the name of this
island, captain?" Villianueva paused, not really having
considered naming the place. He replied, "It is my
isla santuario." It later became known as Santuario
Island. After the tour of the island, Villianueva ordered
the crew and other able men to begin setting up a system
of shelters and stations for the new arrivals and other
facilities.
